Coyotes to the MVFC...And Week 9 NFL Picks

Good Sunday morning!

What a week in Coyote athletics. Home season finales in football and volleyball, plus a startling announcement that the Yotes are going to the Missouri Valley Football Conference...a stark contrast to Monday when the Coyotes were on "the verge" of going to the Big Sky Conference in everything. To me, going to the MVFC was what USD wanted all along. The Big Sky move was just because, at the time, the MVFC wasn't calling. When UND went to the Big Sky on Monday and USD hadn't committed to the Big Sky yet, the MVFC saw their chance and capitalized.

While I gradually accepted the Big Sky, I feel that this is the right move for Coyote athletics. Going to the MVFC, and thus, remaining in the Summit League retains old rivalries with NDSU and SDSU, plus adds new rivalries such as UNI (in football, at least). Keeping regional conference opponents will add to revenue not just for the athletic program, but for the region as well. The closer the opponent is, the more visiting fans will come to the games. Brookings (SDSU) is just two hours away, and UNI and NDSU are about four...plenty of time to go watch a game over the weekend. We will debate this topic further on our show Tuesday night...watch/listen and comment on our opinions!

Today is Sunday, so that means NFL football! Here are our picks for Week 9 plus an update on our NFL picks competition:

BCS Thoughts and NFL Week 7 Picks

Good morning!

So, the first BCS rankings came out last weekend, and I for one, was shocked. Oklahoma #1 in the BCS standings???? Are you kidding me? I'm not knocking the Sooners; they are a very good Big 12 team, but to rank them number one is absurd. Oregon is the #1 team in the AP, and they rightfully should be so in the BCS. The Sooners were sixth in the AP and defeated Iowa State 52-0 in Norman...so why were they moved five spots up? Utah punked the Cyclones by 41 points in Ames a couple of weeks ago, and they DROPPED a spot in the polls. Why is OU any different?

This weekend in college football provides numerous marquee matchups. Here's a quick list of the bigtime games on Saturday:

(16) Nebraska @ (14) Oklahoma St., 2:30PM on KSFY
(13) Wisconsin @ (15) Iowa, 2:30PM on KCAU
(6) LSU @ (4) Auburn, 2:30PM on CBS
(1) Oklahoma @ (11) Missouri, 7PM on ABC

I think NU will have its hands full with Oklahoma State. I picked the Cowboys by 10 points, simply because I think the Huskers still haven't fully gotten over their loss to Texas last Saturday. In terms of Wisconsin/Iowa, thankfully this game is in Iowa City. This is a trap game for the Badgers, as we saw what happened to the Gamecocks after they beat Alabama. If Stanzi & Co. play well, and the defense dominates the Badgers offense as they did against Michigan, Iowa has a great chance to win this game.

For LSU/Auburn, I am guaranteeing a Tigers victory! :) Seriously, though, I am not convinced about LSU. Les Miles is the luckiest person on this planet, as LSU should have lost to Tennessee. Plus, the Tigers victory over Florida in Gainesville is a little less concrete since Mississippi State also beat the Gators in Gainesville. I look for Auburn to dominate this game.

Finally, OU/Missouri. OU is NOT the #1 team in college football. Not even close. Missouri has a huge statement game if they want to be taken seriously in the Big 12 (and in college football, in general). A win in Columbia against the Sooners will push Mizzou into the top 10 and into a big-time matchup against the Huskers. It will be a close game, but I think OU will pull out the win late in the 4th quarter. Look for Mizzou to have an incredible home-field advantage, though. That crowd will be rocking!

And finally, our picks for Week 7 of the NFL. Here they are, plus our standings in the NFL picks competition...

Washington at Chicago (Sunday, 12PM, KTTW & KPTH):
Kyle: WSH
Jerry: WSH
Mitch: CHI
Madden: WSH

Jacksonville at Kansas City (Sunday, 12PM, KELO & KMEG):
Kyle: KC
Jerry: KC
Mitch: KC
Madden: JAX

Pittsburgh at Miami (Sunday, 12PM, CBS):
Kyle: PIT
Jerry: PIT
Mitch: PIT
Madden: MIA

Oakland at Denver (Sunday, 3:15PM, KELO) (KMEG: NE/SD):
Kyle: DEN
Jerry: DEN
Mitch: DEN
Madden: DEN

Minnesota at Green Bay (Sunday, 7:20PM, KDLT & KTIV):
Kyle: MIN
Jerry: GB
Mitch: GB
Madden: GB

Kyle: DAL

Mitch: NYG
Madden: DAL

Coyote Football versus UNI

Good Friday everyone!

The USD Coyote football team has a big game Saturday against UNI. If you can't make it to the Dome to watch the game, listen live on U.Radio! Jerry Palleschi and I will have the call live from the Dome at 3:45PM. You can listen live on 91.1FM, Midcontinent Channel 21, and on the internet at www.live365.com/stations/kaorradio. Overall, it should be a great game. UNI is a perennial FCS playoff contender, and both teams are coming off of grueling road losses. The Coyotes lost to UC-Davis 17-13 and UNI lost to Southern Illinois 45-38 in overtime.

If the Coyote offense can take control of the game like they did against UND, then the Yotes have a good chance of winning. Dante Warren needs to have a good game and Chris Ganious needs to have a great ground game to keep momentum on USD's side.

Good luck to the Coyotes against UNI! Let's have the DakotaDome rocking with Coyote fans!!!

Dakota Days!!!

Happy Dakota Days, everyone!

Support the Coyotes at the Dome tomorrow at 2pm for the Dakota Days game versus UND. It should be a grueling, tough, matchup, but one that the Yotes can win. USD will be looking to avenge their 38-16 loss in Fargo last Saturday against NDSU. The Coyotes don't want to go 2-3 (not after their upset win over Minnesota), don't want to lose their D-Days game, and DEFINITELY do not want to lost to UND again. The Coyotes haven't beaten North Dakota since 2005, and UND has beaten the Yotes the last two times in the Dome under Coach Meierkort. I look for the Coyotes to be revved up and ready to play at game time.

If you cannot make it to the Dome, you can watch the game on the Midco Sports Network (Channel 27), and/or listen to the game live on U.Radio! Jerry Palleschi and I will have the call from the DakotaDome beginning at 1:45pm.

Stay tuned for our Week 4 NFL predictions!

COYOTES WIN!!!!!!!

USD 41, Minnesota 38. What a game. That's all I can say...what an amazing game by the USD Coyotes against Minnesota. According to the Argus Leader, the Yotes were 30 point underdogs, and we WON! From midway through the first quarter to the final whistle, the Coyotes owned the game and played toe-to-toe with the Gophers. Dante Warren silenced all of his critics with a performance that will go down as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) in Coyote sports history. The Yotes scored six touchdowns and Warren was a part of five. He threw for three and rushed for two; the biggest coming on a fourth-and-1 from the Minnesota 36 in the middle of the fourth quarter that gave USD all the momentum.

The Coyote defense did their part, as well. Yes, giving up 38 points may seem like a lot, but against a quality FBS program like Minnesota, they gave the offense the power to win. The Yotes stuffed the Gophers twice on fourth down and came up with crucial turnovers down the stretch to increase the Yotes chances for victory.

I am so proud of this team and what they've accomplished. No one thought they would win but themselves and the Yote fans. Highlights of the game were shown on ESPN throughout the day and night, and College GameDay even wanted a USD helmet for their show. The media exposure and coverage of this monumental upset will be something that will propel the Coyote athletic program and the USD campus forward in their transition to Division One.

What a victory! What a team! What a state! It's a wonderful time to be a Coyote!

Thoughts on College Football Weekend and Week 1 NFL Predictions

Good morning all!

What a weekend in college football. The most exciting game of the week took place on Monday as #3 Boise State outlasted #10 VA Tech in an incredible back-and-forth game. I think this win put Boise in a position to finally say they are a legitimate BCS contender, although their conference schedule leaves something to be desired. The Broncos only test for the rest of the year appears to be Oregon State...not ranked and in Boise. So, Boise State will need to win out and at least have Alabama or Ohio State lose.

Other great games include Jacksonville State upsetting Ole Miss on the Rebels home turf. This was an incredible JSU comeback win, as they trailed 31-10 at halftime. To win on a hail mary and a two-point conversion shows that FCS schools can hang with the big-time power conference schools, too. Ole Miss had many off-the-field distractions and I believe that karma came back to bite them big-time.

Looking ahead to the NFL schedule for Week 1, we make our predictions for the upcoming week. It's our "competition" on Triple Threat...between Mitch, Jerry, and I, and the Madden simulator, who will come out on top at the end of the NFL season?

Mitch: NO
Madden: NO
